My recommendation is AVG Free Edition from Grisoft (http://free.grisoft.com). Does an absolutely fantastic job. They have a paid for version, but for most home users it isn't necessary.
For anti-spyware I recommend Windows Defender from Microsoft. Rock solid and well supported. Only change I make to the configuration is to make sure it does a Full Scan every night and that it Removes anything it finds. Keeps you Windows PC running sweetly.

I'm either gonna get that or The Shield! My mom has AVG and it runs GREAT for her!! And she did end up buying it though!
